Fall Layers

9/24/2021

Hello Friends! It’s been a number of months since I’ve posted and I’m excited to be back! I took some time off to re-charge and enjoy the summer. And I blinked my eyes and suddenly it’s early fall! I always get a little depressed at the end of the summer – who doesn’t? But there is something about those sunny, crisp early autumn mornings that are so energizing.

Here in NYC, fall layers are the best way to dress for cooler mornings and hot afternoons. The days warm up quickly and light layers are essential so that you’re ready for whatever mother nature decides to throw at you.

My favorite summer outfit was the base of this early fall layered look. I wear black bike shorts all the time in the summer and I pair them with a white ribbed tank for the easiest and most versatile warm weather uniform. Since I’m not ready to give up on summer quite yet, I simply added some light weight layers to cover me on those chilly mornings.

For me, a trenchcoat is the ultimate every-season layering piece. I love the way it always elevates an outfit and makes it look a little more polished and put-together. I’ve had this one for a few years – it’s a little darker than the typical khaki ones that you see everywhere. I think the darker shade works really well for fall and I love the unique inset pleat sleeve detail.

As an additional layering piece, I added a lightweight sweater that I’ve had for years. The open knit is perfect for warmer temperatures and the neutral color works with everything in my closet. The layered neutrals add a really nice fall element to my basic summer black and white.

I’ve been a huge fan of cowboy boots all my life and I love how this low version adds just the right dash of fall style to this outfit. And for some reason, the boot and short combo is one that I’m constantly drawn to – check out this post to see how I styled some of my other shorts and boots.

By the middle of the afternoon, I’m usually down to my tank and as the sun sets, the layers go back on. It’s really an effortless way to dress when the weather is unpredictable and fluctuating. The other great thing about this look is that it was pulled straight from my closet. I’m sure you have similar pieces that you can style in the same way!

I’ve linked a few of my favorite trenches, cardigans and boots down below.

See you soon!
