Summer Linen Dress

8/12/2019

I’ve always been a huge fan of the look of linen, so when I spotted this linen dress a few seasons ago at Zara, I had to have it. It screams summer and vacation cocktails by the pool. But I have to admit…I have only worn it once before I shot these pics.

Last week as I was thinking about what I wanted to include in my next blog post, this dress came to mind. I wanted to continue to shoot summer outfits because everyone’s focus is on fall fashion right now but it’s still summer here in NYC. There are lots of dreary, cold months ahead to think about layers, sweaters and boots.

I thought this dress would be the perfect summer look but when I put it on, it looked really dumpy, reminiscent of a shapeless potato sack. The color just emphasized the lifeless and saggy look. No wonder I don’t wear this! I slipped on my sandals thinking that it would help but to no avail. Then it came to me… it needed a belt. I pulled out an old distressed white leather belt that I’ve had for years and viola! This outfit went from dumpy to divine in the blink of an eye.

I’ve no idea why this thought never occurred to me before. Probably because I don’t own tons of belts, especially wider ones that work best belting shirts and dresses. Well, this look has completely changed my perspective on belting dresses and I’m on the hunt for more belts this season.

The best thing about this dress is that it can be worn with with the neckline up or pulled down off-the-shoulder. This gives it such beautiful, summer look. I prefer wearing it this way, the dress just feels a little uptight the the neckline is pulled up. I styled it with my favorite woven bag, which ended up looking great paired with the belt. And for the sandals I just kept it simple with my neutral everyday sandals. These sandals have become such a summer favorite that I devoted a whole blog post to them, check it out here.

I have plans to wear this look out to dinner this week and I can’t wait. All of the items in this outfit are old but I’ve linked some great current versions below. Let me know what you think – you can leave a comment on my Say Hi page.

See you soon!
